FIFA Women’s Campaign: A Milestone in Empowering Women Through Football

On October 10th, 2024, the Bhutan Football Federation (BFF) hosted a landmark event, the “Ama’s and Bumo’s FIFA Women’s Campaign,” aimed at promoting the growth and development of women’s football in Bhutan. This inspiring campaign brought together over 250 girls, aged 7-15, along with their parents, providing a platform for these young talents and their families to engage in the sport. Participants from Dechencholing Higher Secondary School and Sherab Gatshel Primary School enthusiastically joined the event, which was held at Dechencholing Higher Secondary School, Thimphu. Organized in collaboration with Transport United FC, the event was a resounding success, marked by high levels of participation and enthusiasm from all involved.

The program was honored by the presence of Zimbiri, Chairperson of Women’s Football, and Ugyen Wangchhuk, General Secretary of the Bhutan Football Federation. Their support underscored the growing recognition of women’s football in the country and the critical role that parents, especially mothers, play in nurturing the next generation of athletes.

One of the unique aspects of the “Ama’s and Bumo’s FIFA Women’s Campaign” was its emphasis on fostering stronger bonds between parents and children through football. The campaign encouraged mothers and daughters to unite in their love for the sport, creating a shared experience that can strengthen family ties while promoting a healthier lifestyle.

Transport United FC played a key role in coordinating the event, ensuring that parents were actively involved. The club’s initiative to bring families into the fold received an overwhelmingly positive response, with many mothers expressing how impactful the experience was for them. One parent emotionally shared:

“Today, I felt a deep sense of pride and love for my daughter when I saw her footballing skills for the first time. It brought tears to my eyes, knowing how talented she is. Growing up, we never had such opportunities, and I couldn’t provide the support my daughter needed. But today, this event has opened my eyes, and I am truly grateful for the chance to be part of it.”

This powerful testimony reflects the emotional and transformative impact the campaign had, helping parents to recognize the importance of encouraging their children in sports, especially girls, who often face more societal challenges when pursuing athletics.

Football is proving to be a powerful tool in empowering women in Bhutan. The campaign highlighted how the sport encourages not just physical fitness but also mental well-being. For young girls, football offers a way to develop discipline, teamwork, and leadership skills, all of which are valuable beyond the field. Moreover, studies show that active participation in sports positively influences academic performance, making football an avenue to foster both physical health and intellectual growth.

The campaign emphasized the importance of women’s participation in sports for fostering a healthy, balanced lifestyle. Women’s football is also breaking down barriers, offering young girls a platform to pursue their dreams, challenge societal norms, and carve a path toward a more inclusive future.

Transport United FC has been instrumental in promoting women’s football in Bhutan. As co-organizers of the FIFA Women’s Campaign, they demonstrated their commitment to nurturing the sport at the grassroots level. This year, Transport United FC Ladies secured second place in the Bhutan Women’s National League 2024, an impressive achievement that reflects their dedication to advancing women’s football. The club continues to set an example in driving the growth of women’s sports in the country, creating more opportunities for young girls to excel in football.

Transport United FC is determined to keep making strides in promoting football for all, especially women. Their ongoing efforts have not only elevated the club’s standing but also positively impacted the broader football community in Bhutan, inspiring other clubs and organizations to follow suit.

The “Ama’s and Bumo’s FIFA Women’s Campaign” was a resounding success, highlighting the power of sports to unite families, empower women, and promote healthy lifestyles.
