Recalling the Memories: Gelephu Girls’ Academy, Where Dreams Take Flight
Nestled in the southern town of Gelephu, the Gelephu Girls’ Football Academy has become more than just a training center. It’s a second home, a place where passion for football is nurtured, memories are made, and dreams begin to take flight.
Established in 2015, the academy was founded with a powerful mission:
- To serve as a national training hub for girls aspiring to represent Bhutan internationally
- To nurture talent through consistent, high-quality coaching
- To contribute to the growth of women’s football in the country
- And to help build strong character, both on and off the field
For many girls, their journey into football began right here with a pair of cleats, an open field, and a dream. “We’re truly grateful to the academy and everyone who helped us grownot just as players, but as people,” one player shared with emotion. From long training hours to moments of laughter and late-night talks, the memories made here are etched in their hearts.
Some girls even recalled these moments with tears in their eyes not because they were sad, but because those times meant so much. They spoke of friendships, challenges, growth, and the joy of simply playing the game they love.
But it’s not only the players who carry these memories. Coaches Yeshi Wangchuk and Karma Dema, who have served the academy for several years, say the experience was just as impactful for them. “This is where I made mistakes, learned from them, and grew alongside my players,” said Coach Yeshi and karma dema. And coach yeshi said One of his most touching memories? Watching the trees he once planted now grow tall providing shade for the younger generation as they chase their dreams.
The gratitude extends beyond the pitch. Players and coaches continue to thank the warden who looked after them like family, the bus driver who safely transported them between school and training, and the cook whose meals were always comforting after a long day.
We’re also excited to share that a group of young girls from Transport United Youths is now training at the academy. These rising talents bring with them fresh enthusiasm, big dreams, and bright smiles. We’re eager to watch them grow into confident, skilled, and professional footballers. And one day, they too will have their own stories to tell filled with joy, challenges, and cherished memories made right here at gelephu.
Lastly, a heartfelt thank you goes to the Bhutan Football Federation. Without their vision and support, none of this would be possible. “Who we are today, the players, the people is because of the opportunity we were given,” one player said proudly.
As the academy continues to grow, it stands not just as a football training center, but as a place of hope, resilience, and unbreakable bonds where memories are made, and futures are born
