Bhutan Gears Up for the 2024 SAFF Women’s Championship in Kathmandu, Nepal!
Excitement is building as Bhutan prepares to participate in the 2024 SAFF Women’s Championship, set to take place from October 17 to 30 in the vibrant city of Kathmandu, Nepal. This year marks the 7th edition of the SAFF Women’s Championship, a premier event in women’s football contested by the national teams of the South Asian Football Federation (SAFF). The Dasharath Rangasala Stadium in Kathmandu will host all matches, promising a thrilling spectacle of football talent and sportsmanship.
The tournament will see seven formidable teams vying for the title: India, Nepal (host), Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Pakistan, Maldives, and our very own Bhutan. Bangladesh enters as the defending champion, adding an extra layer of intensity to the competition.

Ranked 173rd in the FIFA rankings, Bhutan will be making its 7th appearance in the SAFF Women’s Championship. Our team has shown remarkable progress, with the highlight being the semi-finals appearance in 2022 – the best performance by the Bhutanese women’s team to date. This year, the squad is determined to surpass this achievement and make Bhutan proud.
India, holding the 67th spot in the FIFA rankings, has been the dominant force in the tournament’s history, clinching the championship titles in 2010, 2012, 2014, 2016, and 2019. Close behind is Nepal, ranked 98th, who has been runners-up five times (2010, 2012, 2014, 2019, and 2022).
Bhutan will play three crucial matches in the group stage:
- 18 October 2024: Nepal vs. Bhutan
- 21 October 2024: Bhutan vs. Sri Lanka
- 24 October 2024: Maldives vs. Bhutan
