Charles Tang from Hong Kong, recently been in Bhutan as the Production Director for the Kingdom of Bhutan International Film Festival 2024. This prestigious event, organized by the Bhutanese Film, attracted both local and international attention and concluded with resounding success. Charles played a crucial role in orchestrating this festival, which has now become a hallmark event in Bhutan’s cultural calendar.
During a recent conversation with Transport United FC (TUFC) media, Charles shared insights into his experiences in Bhutan and how his unexpected interaction with the TUFC team transformed him into a passionate supporter. A veteran visitor to Bhutan, Charles had been to the country four times—twice as a tourist and twice for work. His initial visit as a tourist led to the serendipitous meeting with Bhutanese friends, who offered him the opportunity to collaborate on film festival projects. His latest trip brought him back as the Production Director for the Kingdom of Bhutan International Film Festival.
While working on the film festival event in Thimphu, Charles happened upon an advertisement for a football match between two of Bhutan’s top teams, Transport United FC and Paro FC. Being an avid football enthusiast—having played in amateur tournaments and registered with FIFA for five clubs in three countries—Charles couldn’t resist attending the match. Little did he know, this match would ignite his journey as a fan of TUFC.
Seated in the Transport United FC fan zone, Charles found himself amidst fervent supporters chanting “Transport! Transport!” as the team triumphed over Paro FC in a historic victory. Witnessing this electric atmosphere, Charles was captivated. The energy of the crowd and the significance of TUFC’s win over the defending champions made a lasting impression on him. Keen to learn more about the club, Charles made his way to the TUFC office, where he met the club’s president, Jigme Tshewang.
In a friendly conversation, Jigme inquired about Charles’ football background, to which Charles shared his amateur playing experience. Much to his surprise, Jigme extended an invitation for Charles to join the team’s training session. This gesture left Charles deeply moved. “It was remarkable how welcoming they were. To be invited to train with the team after just meeting the president—it’s a testament to the warmth and hospitality of TUFC,” Charles remarked.
Since then, Charles has attended several TUFC matches, not just as a spectator but as an ardent fan. He has also participated in training sessions when time allowed, though he admitted that Bhutan’s high altitude made it challenging to keep up with the players. “The altitude was a hurdle, and I’m not a professional player, but the team’s encouragement and camaraderie made it an unforgettable experience,” he noted. “They constantly reassured me to just keep going, making me feel at home.”
Reflecting on his time in Bhutan, Charles shared how his connection to the country has deepened over the years. “Bhutan holds a special place in my heart. Every visit has allowed me to appreciate the country’s beauty, culture, and kindness even more. The more I work here, the stronger my bond with Bhutan becomes,” he said. He also described his personal moments of introspection during his stay, finding time to visit temples and reflect on life’s blessings. “Though I am not particularly religious, Bhutan has given me the space to contemplate and be grateful for the opportunities and experiences in my life,” he added.
In a lighter moment, Charles humorously recalled his fondness for Bhutanese cuisine. “Whenever I visit a restaurant, my go-to meal is red rice, Shakam Datshi, and Ghep, in small portions. I’m definitely going to miss that,” he said with a laugh.
For a guest visiting to Bhutan, Charles offered thoughtful advice. “Don’t confine yourself to luxury accommodations. Immerse yourself in the local culture—spend time with the people, share meals with them, and experience their way of life. It’s the only way to truly understand the essence of Bhutan. The warmth and positivity you’ll encounter will leave a lasting impact,” he emphasized.
Among the many places he has visited, Punakha remains Charles’ favorite. “The natural beauty of Punakha is awe-inspiring. The mountains, the rivers, and the ever-present view of Punakha Dzong create a mesmerizing landscape that stays with you long after you’ve left,” he said.
In his message to Bhutanese youth, Charles encouraged them to appreciate the opportunities available within their own country. “Don’t be quick to seek opportunities abroad. While it can be challenging, there is immense potential in Bhutan. People from all over the world dream of visiting this country, and there is so much you can achieve here if you remain optimistic and work from the heart.”
Charles reflected on how Bhutan and Transport United FC have both left an indelible mark on his life. “Bhutan is more than just a destination—it’s a place that touches your soul. I’ll always carry the kindness and generosity of this country and the TUFC family with me. Being here has been a true blessing, and I am forever grateful for the experiences and memories I’ve gained.”
