Transport United FC Marks a Historic 24th Anniversary

In a heartfelt celebration that echoed with pride, history, and deep-rooted emotion, Transport United Football Club marked its 24th Foundation Day—becoming the first football club in Bhutan to commemorate such a milestone. The momentous occasion was not just a tribute to the club’s enduring legacy, but a powerful reminder of the unyielding spirit that has driven it forward since its inception in 2001.

Founded under the visionary guidance of the Road Safety and Transport Authority (RSTA), alongside passionate volunteers from the private transport sector, Transport United FC was born with a mission: to unite people through the beautiful game and to embody the values of resilience, teamwork, and integrity. The club quickly became a symbol of hope, pride, and excellence on the Bhutanese football stage.

The early years were marked by glory and promise, but the journey was far from smooth. In 2007, the club faced a major setback with relegation to the second division. However, that moment became a defining turning point. A few steadfast individuals—including the club’s current President, newly appointed Vice President, and a circle of dedicated well-wishers—continued to stand firmly behind the team. With unwavering commitment, they played a crucial role in steering the club back to prominence, culminating in Transport United’s triumphant return to the top division in 2016—reigniting its competitive spirit and the hopes of its loyal supporters.

Last year, the club launched a heartfelt campaign titled “TUFC Legacy Reunion”, aimed at rekindling old memories and reuniting former members of the Transport United family. The success of that initiative paved the way for this year’s celebration to be officially marked as Foundation Day. This special occasion once again brought everyone together—founding members, past and present players, supporters, sponsors, and well-wishers—in a heartfelt tribute to the enduring legacy of Transport United FC.

The presence of Lyonpo Gem Tshering, Minister of Energy and Natural Resources, as the Guest of Honour, added to the historic significance of the night.

In a poignant moment, Lyonpo Gem Tshering stood alongside three of TUFC’s foundational pillars—Member of Parliament Dasho Harka, and former Ministers Lyonpo Loknath and the member of the founding team of TUFC Nidup Dorji—whose shared vision and pioneering spirit laid the groundwork for what would become a cornerstone of Bhutanese football. Their reflections on the club’s humble beginnings and the challenges they overcame spoke volumes of the unity and passion that built TUFC.

TUFC President Jigme Tshewang opened the evening with a heartfelt welcome, expressing profound gratitude to every individual and partner who has contributed to the club’s journey. His address—supported by a visual retrospective—highlighted the club’s evolution from modest origins to national prominence. He also paid tribute to the club’s loyal sponsors, without whom this journey would not have been possible.

The emotional core of the evening came through the heartfelt speeches by Dasho Harka and Lyonpo Loknath, who transported the audience back to the early 2000s with stories rich in determination, teamwork, and a shared dream that became reality.

Starting this year, Transport United FC has officially declared that its Foundation Day will also serve as an occasion to honour players for their outstanding contributions and unwavering commitment to the club. In an era where data and performance analytics increasingly shape modern football, this recognition is not only based on on-field achievements but also supported by insights into player consistency, discipline, and impact—highlighting both heart and hard work.

During the award ceremony, three standout players were specially honoured with appreciation awards: Ugyen Dorji from the men’s team, and Dechen Wangmo and Puja Rai from the ladies’ team—each celebrated for their exceptional dedication, resilience, and contributions to the legacy of TUFC.

The night concluded with a warm dinner and networking session—a fitting end to an evening that encapsulated everything TUFC stands for: family, perseverance, and the love of football.
